The McKenzie Approach is one of the most popular methods physiotherapists use for treating back pain.

HOW DOES THE MCKENZIE APPROACH WORK FOR BACK PAIN

Your physiotherapist trained in the McKenzie treatment model will assess you to find if you have what is called a direction preference or movement bias. The most common direction preference for the spine is called “extension”. This is where the spine extends into a more upright position such as in a movement like the Cobra stretch. While spinal extension is the most common mechanical direction preference – it is not always the right choice. Some people prefer to arch their back or go into spinal “flexion”. Others may actually prefer rotation or a lateral shift movement.

CAN MCKENZIE PHYSIO TREAT BACK PAIN?

Treatment is based around choosing exercises and hands on manual physiotherapy techniques which move you into this directional preference. Repeated movements into this direction are often associated with fast relief of symptoms and can be used to treat many conditions of the back and spine.
